Types of Dental Crowns and Cost

Contact Us

If you have been told you may need a crown, it is normal to wonder which type is best and how much it will cost. In most U.S. offices, dental crowns often cost about $800 to $2,500 per tooth before insurance, though the final fee can be lower or higher depending on the material, tooth location, lab work, insurance, and whether you also need treatment such as a buildup or root canal.

A crown is a custom covering that restores a damaged tooth’s shape, strength, and function. When comparing the types of dental crowns and cost, the goal is usually to balance durability, appearance, bite forces, and how much healthy tooth remains.

If you are unsure which crown material makes sense or whether a damaged tooth can still be saved, a restorative dentistry evaluation can help you compare practical options. At Starlite Dental in McKinney, TX, we explain the diagnosis, likely costs, and treatment steps so you can move forward with more confidence.

Why a Dentist May Recommend a Crown

A dentist may recommend a crown when a tooth is too weakened for a regular filling to hold up well. This can happen after a large cavity, fracture, severe wear, or a very large existing filling.

Crowns are also common after root canal treatment, on top of a dental implant, or when a tooth’s shape or color cannot be corrected predictably with a simpler option. In some cases, a crown helps protect a tooth from breaking further.

Delaying care can allow a crack or cavity to deepen. That can lead to pain, infection, or loss of the tooth.

Not every damaged tooth needs a full crown. Depending on the diagnosis, a filling, bonded restoration, or a partial crown such as an inlay or onlay may preserve more natural tooth structure.

Types of Dental Crowns and Typical Costs

The ranges below are broad U.S. estimates for the crown itself before insurance. Your written estimate may be higher or lower, and it should show whether imaging, a core buildup, a temporary crown, root canal treatment, gum treatment, or implant components are billed separately.

Crown Type

Typical Cost Per Tooth

Common Advantages

Points to Consider

Porcelain-fused-to-metal

$900 to $1,800

Strong, time-tested option with a tooth-colored outer surface

Porcelain can chip, and a dark metal edge may show near the gum over time

All-ceramic or porcelain

$1,000 to $2,500

Natural color and translucency, often preferred for visible teeth

Best use depends on bite forces and the specific ceramic chosen

Zirconia

$1,000 to $2,500

Very strong with a tooth-colored appearance

Appearance and wear can vary by zirconia type and design

Full metal or gold alloy

$900 to $2,500 or more

Durable, often requires less tooth reduction, and can be gentle on opposing teeth when polished

Metallic appearance and precious metal prices may affect cost

Resin or composite

$600 to $1,500

Lower upfront cost in some offices and no metal

Usually less resistant to wear, fracture, and staining

Stainless steel

Often $300 to $1,000

Durable prefabricated option commonly used for children’s primary teeth

Usually temporary for adult permanent teeth

There is no single best crown material for every tooth. A front tooth may favor a more natural-looking ceramic, while a back tooth with heavy chewing forces may do better with zirconia, metal, or another strong option.

If appearance is your main concern, ask whether cosmetic dentistry alternatives such as dental veneers or bonding could meet your goals. Those options are not right for every tooth, but they may be worth discussing.

If you are concerned about sensitivities or alloy choices, you can also read about the biocompatibility of materials. Material selection should be based on the tooth’s condition, your bite, and your overall treatment goals.

Some offices offer same-day crowns made with digital design and in-office milling. That can reduce the need for a temporary crown, but it does not automatically mean the restoration is better, cheaper, or right for every case.

What Affects the Total Cost of Dental Crowns

Insurance may cover part of a crown when it is medically necessary. Coverage often depends on your deductible, coinsurance, waiting periods, frequency limits, and annual maximum.

Cosmetic crowns and replacement of a crown before the plan’s allowed interval may not be covered. It helps to ask for a written treatment estimate with procedure codes and request a pretreatment estimate from your insurer when possible.

The total cost can increase if the tooth needs more than the crown itself. A core buildup, root canal, gum reshaping, extraction, implant treatment, sedation, or specialist care may all add separate fees.

Financing can make treatment easier to manage, but it is smart to review interest rates, deferred-interest terms, and fees. If you compare estimates, make sure you are comparing the same material, supporting procedures, warranty terms, and provider qualifications.

Comfort Options and the Crown Process

Many patients worry less about the crown itself than about getting numb, sitting through treatment, or hearing they need extra work first. A careful exam helps the dentist explain what is needed and what can make the visit more comfortable.

Before treatment, the dentist checks the tooth, bite, gums, and usually dental X-rays. Local anesthetic is typically used while damaged tooth structure is removed and the tooth is shaped.

If you feel nervous, ask in advance about breaks, numbing options, and whether sedation dentistry may be appropriate. For broader coping strategies, you can also read about dental anxiety.

With a traditional crown, the dentist prepares the tooth, takes a digital scan or impression, and places a temporary crown. A dental lab then makes the final crown.

At the next visit, the temporary is removed and the final crown is checked for fit, bite, contacts, and appearance. If everything looks right, the crown is cemented or bonded into place.

A same-day crown process may combine preparation, scanning, fabrication, and placement in one visit. That can be convenient, but not every tooth or material is a good match for same-day treatment.

Implant crowns follow a different path because the implant must be stable before the final crown is attached. If implants are part of your plan, discuss dental implants and the added parts and fees, including the cost of dental implants.

What the Visit and Recovery Usually Look Like

Dentist treating a patient while discussing dental crown types and factors that influence crown cost.

During the preparation visit, you may feel pressure or vibration, but sharp pain is usually controlled with local anesthetic. If a temporary crown is placed, it protects the tooth while the final crown is being made.

After the visit, mild gum tenderness or temperature sensitivity is common for a few days. While wearing a temporary crown, avoid very sticky or hard foods that could loosen or break it.

A new crown can feel a little different at first, especially when you bite. That feeling should settle quickly, and the crown should not continue to feel high or uneven.

Call the dental office if the bite feels off, the crown feels loose, or pain persists or worsens. Ongoing sensitivity should gradually improve, not become more intense.

Crowns can still develop problems at the margin where the restoration meets the natural tooth. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, keeping regular checkups, and wearing a nightguard if prescribed can help the crown last longer.

When to Schedule Care

It is wise to schedule an evaluation soon if a tooth is cracked, repeatedly painful, sensitive to heat or cold, or has lost a large filling. Earlier treatment may preserve more tooth structure and give you more options.

Seek urgent dental care for facial swelling, fever with dental pain, pus or a bad taste with swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or severe worsening pain. Trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, or swelling near the eye needs immediate emergency medical care.

A consultation can confirm whether you need a crown, which material fits your tooth and bite, and what the full cost is likely to be. Bringing your insurance information and asking for an itemized estimate can make the next step feel much clearer.

To confirm whether a crown or alternative is best and get an itemized estimate, book a restorative dentistry consultation. Starlite Dental focuses on restorative dentistry in McKinney with convenient access for patients from Frisco and Allen; call (214) 504-0500 or book online to arrange an exam.

FAQs

How long do crowns last?

Many crowns last about 5 to 15 years, and some last much longer. Research on tooth-supported single crowns shows that survival can be strong over time, but longevity depends on factors such as the material, fit, oral hygiene, decay risk, grinding, bite forces, and the health of the tooth underneath.

What is the cheapest type of dental crown?

Resin crowns may have a lower upfront price in some offices. Even so, the least expensive option at the start may not be the most cost-effective if it wears down, stains, or fractures sooner.

Does dental insurance pay for crowns?

Many dental plans cover a percentage of a medically necessary crown after the deductible. Annual maximums, waiting periods, and replacement frequency rules can still limit what the plan pays.

Is a crown painful?

A crown procedure is usually done with local anesthetic, so most patients feel pressure or vibration rather than sharp pain. Mild soreness or sensitivity afterward can happen, but severe or worsening pain should be checked.

Can a tooth need a root canal before a crown?

Yes, sometimes it can. A root canal may be needed if the pulp inside the tooth is irreversibly inflamed or infected, but many teeth can receive a crown without root canal treatment.

I came here for the first time today as a second opinion after a first visit to serene. Gia was excellent not only on the phone but in-person as well. The dentist`s assistant was very interested in how they were best able to help me in my comfort and affordability with my in-network insurance. The dentist was able to recommend that I needed 1 less crown and filling and didn't even mention to try to sell me a night guard(I'll get one when I'm ready)They answered all my questions and even some I didn't think to ask. Their office and equipment are clean and comforting. I still have to get crowns, but I feel better about going to Starlite for them. Thank you ladies. Hi, a year later, I still love this dentist and her people. I've now sent my husband as a patient and have brought my 3 yr old along for my cleaning. She had such a good time and everyone was so patient and kind. Everyone is so great! It's been 3 years since my last review and this place is just as good as it was when I first started coming, actually even better. Over the last couple years they have upgraded their waiting room. In addition to free wifi, now we can wait with video games, a coffee with sugar-free syrups, and pre-pasted toothbrushes to get clean before you get cleaned. On top of that, Starlite still has a very professional staff that are good caring people. 5 Stars for Starlite!
